Title: Revising SCM standards

If you want to know what Software Configuration Management (SCM) is and how it should be practised the most obvious thing would be to consult a standard for SCM. The most widely accepted and used is the IEEE 828-2012 Standard for Configuration Management in Systems and Software Engineering. There are also other standards for specialized sectors, but the IEEE standard is the most general.

Last year the IEEE established a working group with the task of revising and updating their SCM standard. Most probably in light of their recent standard for DevOps, but also in light of the 7-8 years' cadence for new revisions that they have kept at least since 1990. We in the sneSCM.org network have been given the possibility to influence how this work is carried out and contribute to it with our Scandinavian/European perspective.

In this CMCM, we want to inform you a little about what is happening in the working group, but most importantly we want to solicit as much input and ideas as possible to bring back to the working group.

SWEBOK is the Body Of Knowledge for SoftWare Engineering and is based on the standards for the various knowledge areas. Access to SWEBOK - in contrast to the standards - is free and SCM is chapter 6 (15 pages) in the current version of SWEBOK. So, if you want to prepare for this CMCM - and don't want to pay for the standard - you know where to go.
