Title: Configuration Item vs Configuration Item Elements.

In some contexts, things that are associated to and describe a configuration item (CI), like documents, are not considered as CIs in their own right but rather as CI Element. In other contexts, everything that is considered important to track, also documents, are considered CIs in their own right.

I am curious about the pros and cons with either way of considering the configuration, and whether it actually makes any difference in the end. My feeling is that it might not change much on the conceptual level, but it does on the practical, when it comes to tools, methods and procedures – and not least, expectation on what the configuration manager role is all about.
