When working with "digital data" it is easy to create copies - far too easy. This leads to people working in parallel on these "identical copies" giving rise to several nasty co-ordination problems.

Version control theory (and most tools) provide models and functionality to help people manage many/most of the co-ordination problems and thus get away with seemingly dangerous behaviour.
