One of the four traditional activities of SCM that is often overlooked is that of Configuration Status Accounting (CSA).
This activity is about recording and reporting information. It used to be recording basic data about "the health" of a project and to be reported to the project manager in a bi-weekly printed report.
Modern CSA can (and should) be much more than that. First of all we have the possibility to collect and distribute "live data" as they happen. Second, there is a much larger group than just the project manager that can profit from the information SCM can provide. Third, the "scope for improvement" can reach beyond a single project and target also the whole organization or the business - or SCM itself.
How could and should SCM navigate in this new reality?
